Praxis II Library Media Specialist (5311) Examination General Information

The Education Testing Service (ETS) board conducts the Praxis II series with the goal of certifying qualified educators to teach in any state in the US. The Praxis II Series assesses an educator’s skills and capabilities that are needed in teaching the subject. Educators who wish to work as a librarian may take the Praxis II Library Media Specialist Exam in order to attain the required marks needed to teach in a certain state. The Praxis II Library Media Specialist Exam challenges the educator’s practical and fundamental knowledge in being an excellent librarian in five different sections.

Eligibility for Praxis II Library Media Specialist (5311) Exam

To be eligible to take the Praxis II Library Media Specialist exam, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions presented by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. If the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Library Media Specialist (5311) Exam

The Praxis II Economics Exam is composed of 120 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 2 hours to attempt the exam. These questions are grouped into five different sections that correspond to a skill and a capability crucial for handling a librarian position in a school: Program Administration; Collection Development; Information Access and Delivery; Learning and Teaching; Professional Development, Leadership, and Advocacy. Examinees should remember that not all questions are marked.

The Professional Development; Leadership and Advocacy section of the PRAXIS II Library Media Specialist Exam (0311 and 5311) focuses on the Children’s Internet Protection Act; laws concerning equal access and intellectual freedom; accreditation and certification legislation that impacts libraries and education; advocacy; community involvement; code of ethics; professional resources and journals; AECT, AASL, ALA and other professional organizations and programs. There are 21 questions for this section which contributes to 18% of the total score.

•  The Learning and Teaching section of the PRAXIS II Library Media Specialist Exam (0311 and 5311) concentrates on copyrights; legal and ethical guidelines regarding information; library environments; scheduling; equal library access for all individuals; staff and facilities; online resources; distance learning; interlibrary loan; communication technology; search engines; retrieval processes; literary awards; book reviews; information resources; curriculum development and integration; collaborative planning and instruction; instructional strategies for various grade levels; and library orientation. There are 26 questions for this section which contributes to 21% of the total score.

•  The Information Access and Delivery section of the PRAXIS II Library Media Specialist Exam (0311 and 5311) addresses obtaining and organizing resources; circulation; cataloging materials; classifying materials; publications subscriptions; ordering procedures; and publisher evaluations. There are 26 questions for this section which contributes to 21% of the total score.

•  The Collection Development section of the PRAXIS II Library Media Specialist Exam (0311 and 5311) reviews audio-visual equipment, computer equipment, supplies and services, bibliographical resources, information resources, and policy selection of materials for a library. There are 33 questions for this section which contributes to 28% of the total score.

•  The Program Administration section of the PRAXIS II Library Media Specialist Exam (0311 and 5311) covers facility renovation; new facility planning and construction; service access for the disabled; budgeting; supervision of students; volunteers; paid staff; staff scheduling; training; needs assessment; priority setting; planning; organization; administration; libraries philosophy and mission statement. There are 14 questions for this section which contributes to 12% of the total score.
