Praxis II Reading Specialist (5301) Exam Study Guide

The Education Testing Service (ETS) board conducts the Praxis II series in order to assess competent educators. Certifications granted allow educators to teach in any state they applied for. The Praxis II Series assesses an educator’s talents and capabilities that are required to be able to successfully teach the subject/s. Educators who wish to teach at a secondary level may take the Praxis II Reading Specialist Exam in order to attain the required marks needed to teach in a certain state. The Praxis II Reading Specialist Exam challenges the educator’s practical knowledge on the subject area in two parts, in five different sections.

Eligibility for Praxis II Reading Specialist (5301) Exam

To be eligible to take the Praxis II Reading Specialist exam, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions required by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. If the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Reading Specialist (5301) Exam

The Praxis II Reading Specialist Exam is composed of 80 selected-response questions, 1 constructed-response questions and 1 case study. Examinees are given 120 minutes to complete the exam. There is no penalty for incorrect answers thus examinees should aim to answer all the questions. This Reading Specialist test covers: Assessment and Diagnostic Teaching; Reading and Writing Development; Leadership Skills and Specialized Knowledge of Pedagogical Principles and Instructional Practices; Professional Learning and Leadership; and Analysis of Individual Student Case Study. The test may contain some questions that will not count toward your total score.

Part A (Selected response test) (80 questions – 80%)

• Understanding the use of assessment data to plan reading instruction

Reading and Writing Development (45 questions – 45%)

• Development of oral language and oral communication skills
• Development of phonological awareness, in b ,concluding phonemic awareness
• Promoting students’ understanding of concepts of print and basic phonetic principles
• Explicit, systematic phonics instruction
• Word-analysis skills and vocabulary development
• Development of reading fluency and reading comprehension
• Reading comprehension strategies for fiction and poetry
• Reading comprehension strategies for nonfiction
• Writing skills and processes
• Promoting students’ knowledge of correct spelling, usage, and other writing mechanics
• Writing and reading as tools for inquiry and research

Leadership Skills and Specialized Knowledge of Pedagogical Principles and Instructional Practices (15 questions – 15%)

• Specialized knowledge and skills required to perform the role of a reading specialist
• Leadership roles of the reading specialist in organizing and supervising reading programs and promoting staff development
• Strategies for communicating and collaborating with all members of the educational community to address the goals of the reading program
