Praxis II Social Studies: Content Knowledge (5081) Exam Study Guide


The Education Testing Service (ETS) board conducts the Praxis II series in order to assess aspiring educators. Certifications that are granted allow educators to teach in any state they applied for. The Praxis II Series assesses an educator’s talents and capabilities that are required to be able to successfully teach the subject/s. Educators who wish to teach at a secondary level may take the Praxis II Social Studies Exam in order to attain the required marks needed to teach in a certain state. The Praxis II Social Studies Exam challenges the educator’s knowledge on the subject area in six different sections.

Eligibility for Praxis II Social Studies: Content Knowledge (5081) Exam


To be eligible to take the Praxis II Social Studies exam, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions required by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. If the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Social Studies: Content Knowledge (5081) Exam


The Praxis II Social Studies Exam is composed of 130 selected-response questions. Examinees are given 120 minutes to complete the exam. There is no penalty for incorrect answers thus examinees should aim to answer all the questions. However, some questions may not be marked and recorded towards the final score. The test covers: United States History; World History; Government/Civics/Political Science; Geography; Economics; and Behavioral Sciences.

  • North American geography, peoples, and cultures prior to European colonization
  • Origins of the American Revolution and its impact on the founding of the United States
  • United States Constitution and Bill of Rights
  • Causes and consequences of territorial expansion of the United States
  • Impact of race, gender, and ethnicity throughout American history
  • How participants in the political process engage in politics and shape policy
  • Struggles and achievements of individuals and groups for greater political and civil rights throughout United States history

World History (26 items – 20%)

  • Formation, organization, and interactions of the classical civilizations
  • Major political, social and economic developments in Europe from the Renaissance through the Enlightenment
  • Major developments of the post-Cold War world
  • Technological innovations and adaptations
  • Roles of major world religions in shaping societies and effecting major historical turning points

Government/Civics/Political Science (26 items – 20%)

  • Political theory
  • United States government and politics
  • Comparative politics and international relations

Geography (19 items – 15%)

  • Map types and projections
  • Mental maps
  • Recognizing and interpreting spatial patterns
  • Locating and using sources of geographic data
  • Spatial concepts
  • Characteristics and spatial distribution of Earth’s ecosystems
  • Patterns of migration and settlement
  • Political geography

Economics (19 items – 15%)

  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics

Behavioural Sciences (13 items – 10%)

  • Human behaviour
  • Culture and cultural change, human adaptation, and diversity
