The Educational Testing Service conducts several exams where educators can appraise their abilities in teaching. Exam passers are granted certifications that allow them to legally practice in the state as an educator. Aspiring educators who are aiming to teach art as their subject can opt to take the Praxis II Art Exam. The exam may be taken by an applicant in any state and credibility will still be given.

The Praxis II Art Exam contains two parts:

  • Content, tradition, criticism, and aesthetics
  • Content knowledge test

Eligibility for Praxis II Art: Content and Analysis (5135) Exam


To be eligible to take the Praxis II Art Exam, applicants must hold a bachelor degree in art or art education from any state or national university. Applicants who obtain the certification are given credentials in teaching at a junior and senior high school level. If the examinee fails to reach the minimum marks for passing the exam, then he/she is allowed to retake the test but only after a period of 30 days. In some states, examinees can retake the Praxis II Art Exam again and again until they achieve a satisfactory score.

Format of Praxis II Art: Content and Analysis (5135) Exam


The Praxis II Art Exam (content, tradition, criticism, and aesthetics) consists of three constructive response queries that tests the educators’ principles regarding the nature of art. Examinees are given 60 minutes to complete the test.

The Praxis II Art Exam (content Knowledge Test) is composed of 120 multiple choice questions and examinees are given 120 minutes to complete the exam. Examinees should try to answer as many questions as possible as mistakes are given no penalty.

Syllabus of Praxis II Art: Content and Analysis (5135) Exam


The Praxis II Art Exam (content, tradition, criticism and aesthetics) part, composed of three constructive-response queries, covers these topics: content of art, global traditions in art, criticism and aesthetics.

On the other hand, the Praxis II Art Exam (content Knowledge Test) covers:

  • Traditional art and architecture – 36% - 43 questions – terminologies used in artwork, artworks, artifacts, architecture, thematic influences
  • Art criticism and Aesthetics – 25% - 30 questions – traditional art element, vocabulary of art forms, relationship between form and content.
  • Making of art – (39%) – 47 questions – material used in making of art, safety issues related to art, 2D art, 3D art.

Listed above is the possible number of questions on the different topics that are to appear in the exam. Though weightage differs from one topic to another, it is advised that applicants should thoroughly study all the topics covered by the exam.
