Reading is one of the most important skills ever learned by mankind and educators who are willing to help teach this subject and pass this skill down to future generations need to possess certain capabilities needed for the task. The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) tests such educators with the FTCE Reading exam in order to identify his/her capabilities. Those who pass the exam can apply for two different types of certifications, professional and temporary. Professional certifications expire after five academic years but can be renewed. Temporary certifications, however, are non-renewable after a period of three years. To continue, educators then must apply for a professional certification. Each certification has different eligibility criteria which have to be complied in order to take the exam.
Eligibility Requirements for FTCE Reading K-12 Exam
To appear for the FTCE Reading Exam, candidates should meet these guidelines issued by the education board. For both professional and temporary certifications, candidates should have a bachelor degree. Professional certification applicants must also have a master’s degree. For temporary certifications, applicants are required to have a GPA of 2.5.
In both cases, applicants should present a fingerprint report to the board; without these files, an applicant may not take the exam and cannot obtain a certification.
Examination Format of FTCE Reading K-12 Test
The FTCE Reading Exam is a multiple choice question exam which tests the objective knowledge of the examinee on reading. The exam covers:
• Literary composition
• Decoding and encoding the composition
• Fluency
• Reading and interpreting the content area
• Interpretation of various elements
• Research in reading field
• Supervising and instructing the entire program
The FTCE Reading Exam contains 120 multiple choice questions to be answered within 150 minutes. Examinee will have to choose the best possible answer out of four options. The exam contains different types of questions such as:
• Direct questioning
• Situation analysis
• Commanding query
• Completing the sentence
