As they say, English is THE universal language. Educators who encounter students who are not raised with English as their main language may have to adjust their way of teaching in order to be capable of teaching the English language to them. To be able to identify individuals that are able to teach ESOL, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) conducts the Florida Teacher Certification Exam – English to Speaker of Other Language Exam (FTCE-ESOL) to certify eligible educators. Candidates can apply for a professional or temporary certification to be permitted to practice in the Florida State. Both certifications have different eligibility criteria which candidates have to meet before applying for the certification.
Note the Qualifications for FTCE Florida ESOL Test
To appear for the FTCE English for Speakers of Other Languages Exam, candidate needs to fulfil the requirements listed by the education board. Both certifications require a bachelor degree and should submit a fingerprint report, to be processed by the board for the granting of certification. Professional certification candidates need to have specialization in the subject while temporary certification candidates are required to have a 2.5 GPA in the subject.
A professional certification is valid for five years is renewable.
A temporary certification is valid for only three years and is non-renewable. Educators would then have to apply for a professional certification.
Examination Layout for FTCE Florida ESOL Test
The exam covers mostly techniques and principles in teaching English to non-English speakers. The FTCE English to Speakers of Other language Exam includes following topics:
- Principles in speaking language
- Acquisition theories of English language
- Socio and cultural theories for adapting English as a foreign language
- Curriculum and resources required for English language
- Instructional language
The FTCE English to Speakers of Other language Exam is composed 120 multiple choice questions. It is recommended that takers should study thoroughly these topics with the help of an effective study guide. It is possible to obtain the certification in the first attempt with committed studying.
