CSET Music Exam Study Guide


The California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) is a certification exam conducted by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) that determines potential educators who are able to teach in the state. Educators must be very familiar with the subject to pass the exam and their competencies should be strong enough to tend to the needs of their future students. The CSET Music Exam tests aspiring educators’ efficiency in the field of teaching with three different subtests. Examinees must have to pass all three subtests and if ever an applicant fails a particular subtest, he/she can retake the exam only after a period of 45 days. The exam scores are valid for 5 years from the day of score declaration. 

Eligibility for CSET Music Exam


To be eligible to take the CSET Chemistry Exam, applicants must first have to comply with the eligibility criteria listed by the CTC board. Applicants should satisfy all educational requirements before applying for the CSET Chemistry Exam by proving his skills in the field. Examinees should also prepare well and study hard for the exam as it is the main determining reason for attaining a certification.

Format of CSET Music Exam


The CSET Music Exam determines the level of the applying educator’s knowledge and competencies that are needed for teaching in the subject area. The exam revolves around these topics: artistic approach, creativity in expression, historic and cultural importance of music, maintaining aesthetic approach, relating and conceptualizing the music and methodology in playing it. Examinees should also focus on these topics included in the CSET Music Exam: aural and written theory of music, keyboard skills and composing music, critical appreciation, and evaluation.

The exam has both multiple-choice questions and subjective answers hence examinees should have a decent knowledge base as well as good writing skills. Examinees should aim to answer as concise yet precise as possible; so as to gain a high marking score from the special educator from the board marking the exam. The exam has a total of 300 points out of which 220 marks are needed to be able to pass the exam and qualify for a certification.
