Praxis II Health and Physical Education: Content Knowledge (5857) Examination General Information

The Educational Testing Service conducts the Praxis II Health and Physical Education Exam in order to appraise educators’ skills and capabilities so that they may be able to teach Health and Physical Education in any state. Three are two Praxis II Health and Physical Education Exams and both are content knowledge tests. The 5857-code exam is for K-12 teachers while the 5856-code exam is for educators who wish to teach Health and Physical Education in general.

Eligibility for Praxis II Health and Physical Education: Content Knowledge (5857) Exam

To be eligible to take any of the available Praxis II Health and Physical Education Exams, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions required by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. If the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Health and Physical Education: Content Knowledge (5857) Exam

The Praxis II Health and Physical Education Exam (5857) is composed of 120 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 120 minutes to attempt the exam. The exam is divided into to two parts, a Health Education test and a Physical Education test. Approximately 50 of the 120 test questions focus on studies of health, while approximately 70 questions focus on studies of and experiences in Physical Education.

The Praxis II Health and Physical Education Exam (5857) is composed of 130 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 130 minutes to attempt the exam. This exam is also divided into to two parts, a Health Education test and a Physical Education test. Approximately 58 of the 120 test questions focus on studies of health, while approximately 72 questions focus on studies of and experiences in Physical Education.

Syllabus of Praxis II Health and Physical Education: Content Knowledge (5857) Exam

Both exams have almost the same syllabus and the questions are categorized.

•  The Fitness and Exercise Science section of the exam covers biomechanics, human biology, physical conditioning, mass, force, friction, torque, anatomy, physiology, bodily systems, bones and major muscles, flexibility, body composition, muscular endurance, and the cardiopulmonary system.

•  The Movement Forms section of the exam covers volleyball, track and field, soccer, basketball, tennis, softball, martial arts, equipment and facilities, injury prevention, games, gymnastics, tumbling, aerobic and folk dance.

•  The Fundamental Movements, Motor Development, and Motor Learning section of the exam covers motor learning, motor performance, growth and motor development, spatial relationships, loco-motor and manipulative motor skills, movement concepts, and neurophysiology.

•  The Community Health/Diseases and Disorders section of the exam covers teenage depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, suicide prevention and treatment, Down’s syndrome, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, Tay-Sachs disease, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological, infectious and sexually-transmitted diseases, and health-care career opportunities.

•  The Family Living and Sex Education section of the exam covers health maintenance, personal values and decision-making, peer and family relationships, marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, family planning, male and female reproductive systems, domestic violence, rape, incest, divorce, teenage pregnancy, child rearing, chronic care facilities, seniors services, death and dying, and grief.

•  The Personal Health Care section of the exam covers injury prevention; environmental safety; goal setting; first aid and CPR; water safety; fitness assessments; over-the-counter, prescription and illegal drugs; tobacco; alcohol; caffeine; drug abuse treatment; regular checkups; diet and exercise; and nutrition.
