Praxis II General Science: Content Knowledge (5435) Examination General Information


The Praxis II General Science Exam is conducted by the Education Testing Service (ETS) so as to certify aspiring educators who wish to teach the different sciences to students with General Science as his/her specialization. The certification allows the educator to teach in any state in the US. The exam has five different sections and each category covers a group of related major sciences.

Eligibility for Praxis II General Science: Content Knowledge (5435) Exam


To be eligible to take the Praxis II General Science Exam, applicants should hold a bachelor degree from any state or national university. Each state, however, has different passing criteria hence examinees should consider acing the particular section where the state requires higher marks in. In the event that the examinee should fail to pass the exam, he/she is given the chance to retake the exam but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II General Science: Content Knowledge (5435) Exam


The Praxis II Educational Leadership Exam is composed of 135 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 2.5 hours to attempt the exam. These questions are classified into five different categories, with different weightings, that correspond to the branches of science and the scientific method: Scientific Methodology, Techniques, and Development (11%); Physical Science (38%); Life Science (20%); Earth and Space Science (20%); Science, Technology, and Society (11%). The test may contain some questions that will not count toward your total score. There will be no need to use calculators and a periodic table of the elements will be provided.

Syllabus of Praxis II General Science: Content Knowledge (5435) Exam


The Scientific Methodology, Techniques, and History category of the exam covers: Methods of Scientific Inquiry and Design; Processes Involved in Scientific Data Collection and Manipulation; Interpret and Draw Conclusions from Data Presented in Tables, Graphs, Maps, and Charts; Procedures for Correct Preparation, Storage, Use, and Disposal of Laboratory Materials; How to Use Standard Equipment in the Laboratory and the Field; Safety and Emergency Procedures in the Laboratory; Major Historical Developments of Science. Approximately 15 questions.

•  The Physical Science category of the exam covers: Basic Principles; Chemistry; and Physics. Approximately 51 questions.

•  The Life Science category of the exam covers: Basic Structure and Functions of Cells and Their Organelles; Key Aspects of Cell Reproduction and Division; Basic Biochemistry of Life; Basic Genetics; theory and Key Mechanisms of Evolution; Hierarchical Classifications Scheme; Major Structures of Plants and Their Functions; Basic Anatomy and Physiology of Animals, including the Human Body; Key aspects of Ecology. Approximately 27 questions.

•  The Earth and Space Science category of the exam covers: Physical Geology; History Geology; Earth’s Bodies of Water; Meteorology and Climate; Astronomy. Approximately 27 questions.

•  The Science, Technology, and Society category of the exam covers: Impact of Science and Technology on the Environment and Society; Major Issues associated with Energy Production and the Management of Natural Resources; Applications of Science and Technology in Daily Life; and Impact of Science on Public Health Issues. Approximately 15 questions.
